'Untitled' was developed for entry into the Hobart Art Prize (Paint and Fibre), in 2012. The prize, established over 24 years, aims to respond to contemporary creative practices by inviting artists across two forms of media to exhibit. The definition of media is left open to practitioners to explore and propose radical approaches to their art forms. 'Untitled' questions the connection of stitch structures through materiality in domestically machine knitted cloth. While the repetition of pattern is primarily the same, scale and material combinations is adapted through the making process to exaggerate three-dimensionality of the surface and negative space. The somewhat horizontal nature of a knitted fabric has been manipulated throughout the piece to create multiple angles and rhythm. 'Untitled', while appears fragile, is robust in the links made between the opposing material sections. The exploration of the medium and making process in 'Untitled', elevates the potential of a knitted textile to become an artefact. This allows for domestically machine knitted textiles to enter a new forum alongside artists from a variety of disciplines (not specifically fibre), such as intentionally recognised artist Julia DeVille. The selection of Untitled for this exhibition reflects international shifts in creative practices, where traditional craft processes are investigated and referenced in new forms.
