This dataset contains data and scripts for the paper 3D Printing Heritage Trees. We have developed a method for 3D printing heritage trees from laser scanned point clouds. Heritage trees are ancient trees of significant historical, cultural, and ecological importance. Louisiana has many large, old, and culturally significant specimens of southern live oak, i.e. Quercus virginiana, and bald cypress, i.e. Taxodium distichum. These trees are charismatic megaflora – specimens that capture the imagination of the public and encourage broader support for biodiversity conservation. To preserve a record of the most significant heritage trees in Louisiana, we have developed a process of terrestrial laser scanning, volumetric modeling, and powder-based 3D printing.
本数据集包含《3D打印古树》论文配套的数据与脚本文件。本研究开发了一种基于激光扫描点云实现古树(heritage trees)3D打印的方法。古树指具备重要历史、文化与生态价值的古老树木。路易斯安那州拥有大量体型庞大、年代久远且文化价值突出的南部活栎(Quercus virginiana)与落羽杉(Taxodium distichum)标本。这类树木属于魅力型巨型植物(charismatic megaflora)——此类标本能够唤起公众的想象力,进而推动社会对生物多样性保护的广泛支持。为留存路易斯安那州最具代表性的古树记录,本研究开发了一套涵盖地面激光扫描、体素建模与粉末基3D打印的完整工作流程。
