Analysis of Translation Techniques in the English Translations of Press Releases

This article is aimed at identifying, describing and explaining the types of translation techniques used in translating press releases from French into English published on the official websites of some ministries of Cameroon. These include the areas of public exams (Ministry of Public Service and Administrative Reforms), education (Ministries of Secondary and Higher Education), transport (Ministry of Sports), health (Ministry of Public Health), economy (Ministry of Finance), and public relations (Ministry of External Relations). The Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) approach by Gideon Toury, the communication and skopos theories of translation were used to analyse 50 (fifty) excerpts of French press releases which have been translated into English. The findings show that the most used translation technique in the English translation of press releases was Modulation, followed by Amplification. However, 11 translation techniques are identified in the English translations of press releases.本研究旨在识别、描述并阐释喀麦隆部分部委官方网站发布的法语新闻稿英译所采用的翻译技巧类型。本次研究涉及的领域涵盖公共考试（对应公共服务与行政改革部）、教育（对应中等与高等教育部）、交通（对应体育部）、卫生（对应公共卫生部）、经济（对应财政部）以及公共关系（对应对外关系部）。本研究采用吉迪恩·图里（Gideon Toury）提出的描述性翻译研究（Descriptive Translation Studies, DTS）范式，结合翻译传播理论与翻译目的论，对50篇法语新闻稿的英译节选展开分析。研究结果显示，新闻稿英译中使用频率最高的翻译技巧为调变法（Modulation），其次为增译法（Amplification）。不过，本研究共识别出11种应用于新闻稿英译的翻译技巧。
