The study of Neogene stratigraphic species distribution in the Western High Atlas (WHA) reveals significant environmental and sedimentary variation. Literature data and our stratigraphic sections show a diversity of fauna, notably bivalves, gastropods and benthic foraminifera, essential for dating sediments and interpreting paleoenvironmental conditions. Variations in species abundance and size during the Neogene reflect environmental changes, such as water temperature and salinity. Specific fossils are needed to precisely define the limits of the Pliocene.
