人民日报社承担着宣传党的理论和路线方针政策，宣传中央的重大决策部署，宣传党的主张、弘扬社会正气、通达社情民意、引导社会热点、疏导公众情绪、搞好舆论监督，及时传播国内外各领域的信息，报道世界上发生的重大事件并发表评论等重要职责。人民日报是中国第一大报，1992年被联合国教科文组织评为世界十大报纸之一。  创刊以来，在党中央坚强领导下，人民日报坚持政治家办报和党性原则，与党和人民同心同德，深入宣传党的理论和路线方针政策，热情报道人民的伟大实践，在革命、建设、改革各个历史时期发挥了十分重要的作用，创造了光荣历史。

People's Daily Agency shoulders important responsibilities including publicizing the Party's theories, lines, principles and policies, promoting major decisions and deployments of the CPC Central Committee, articulating the Party's propositions, upholding social integrity, conveying public conditions and aspirations, guiding public discourse on hot social issues, alleviating public emotions, conducting effective supervision by public opinion, timely disseminating information from various fields at home and abroad, and reporting major global events while publishing relevant comments. As the largest newspaper in China, People's Daily was listed among the world's top ten newspapers by UNESCO in 1992.
Since its founding, under the firm leadership of the CPC Central Committee, People's Daily has adhered to the principles of running newspapers with political stewardship and upholding Party spirit, stood in solidarity with the Party and the people, thoroughly disseminated the Party's theories, lines, principles and policies, enthusiastically reported the great practices of the people, played an extremely important role in all historical periods of revolution, construction and reform, and created a glorious history.
