In a field study, nest guarding male common gobies showed individual differences in behavioural response to disturbance during simulated predation risk. If behaviour differs consistently between individuals, the question is whether these differences also are reflected in the nest holders’ reproductive success. There was a difference in nesting success with some nests being abandoned prematurely. The hypothesis is that bolder individuals, taking higher risks to guard their nests, are more successful in keeping their nest for the whole nesting cycle, from spawning to hatching of the offspring. The results showed that larger males abandoned their nests prematurely and stayed away longer from their nests.

本项野外研究显示，护巢的雄性普通虾虎鱼（common goby）在模拟捕食风险情境下，对干扰的行为反应存在个体差异。若个体间的行为差异具有稳定性，则需进一步探究此类差异是否同样会体现在巢主的繁殖成功率上。本次研究中巢成功率存在差异，部分巢穴被过早弃守。本研究提出如下假设：更大胆的个体为守护巢穴甘愿承担更高风险，因此能够在从产卵到幼体孵化的完整繁殖周期内更成功地守护巢穴。研究结果表明，体型更大的雄性个体将巢穴过早弃守，且离巢的持续时间更长。
