Final Report for Department of Energy MDSplus Development and Support Grant

MDSplus is a general-purpose data management system widely used across the magnetic fusion research community [Stillerman et al., 1997; Fredian et al., 2018]. Established in 1989 as a collaboration between MIT, CNR, and LANL, it has grown into the primary data infrastructure for major experiments including DIII-D and NSTX-U, and is in active use at more than 60 fusion research sites across six continents. Its architecture combines a hierarchical record store with a loosely typed expression evaluator, integrating data acquisition, metadata preservation, and analysis scheduling into a single framework. Since its inception on VMS, the software has been ported to all major modern operating systems (Linux, Windows, and macOS) while maintaining full backward compatibility: data written in 1989 remains readable by today's software. This is the final report for the five year period 2/1/2021 to 2/1/2026.

MDSplus是一款通用数据管理系统，广泛应用于磁聚变研究领域[Stillerman等人，1997；Fredian等人，2018]。该系统于1989年由麻省理工学院（MIT）、意大利国家研究委员会（CNR）及洛斯阿拉莫斯国家实验室（LANL）合作研发，现已成长为包括DIII-D与NSTX-U在内的重大聚变实验的核心数据基础设施，并在全球六大洲的60余个聚变研究站点持续活跃使用。其架构将分层记录存储与弱类型表达式求值器相结合，将数据采集、元数据保留与分析调度整合为统一框架。该软件最初基于VMS系统开发，现已移植至所有主流现代操作系统（Linux、Windows及macOS），且保持完全向后兼容——1989年写入的数据至今仍可通过当前版本软件读取。本报告为2021年2月1日至2026年2月1日五年周期的最终报告。
