Athena fights Alkyoneus

This is a part of the high-relief frieze The battle between the Giants and the Olympian Gods on the socle of the Zeus' Altar in Pergamon. According to the mythographer Apollodorus, Alcyoneus' confrontation with Heracles was part of the Gigantomachy, the cosmic battle of the Giants with the Olympian gods. Alcyoneus was said to be immortal as long as he was in his native land. When Heracles shot Alcyoneus with an arrow, Alcyoneus fell to the ground but then began to revive, so on the advice of Athena, Heracles dragged Alcyoneus out of his homeland where Alcyoneus died.本展品为帕加马（Pergamon）宙斯祭坛基座上《巨神与奥林匹亚诸神之战》高浮雕饰带的残部。据古典神话学家阿波罗多洛斯（Apollodorus）考证，阿尔库俄纽斯（Alcyoneus）与赫拉克勒斯（Heracles）的对决乃是巨人之战（Gigantomachy）的组成部分——这场战役是巨人们与奥林匹亚诸神之间的宇宙级鏖战。传说阿尔库俄纽斯只要身处故土便能永生不死。当赫拉克勒斯以箭射中阿尔库俄纽斯后，后者虽倒地却随即复苏，于是雅典娜（Athena）建议赫拉克勒斯将阿尔库俄纽斯拖离其故土，阿尔库俄纽斯最终在此地毙命。
