Saffron, derived from Crocus sativus, boasts a distinct metabolic composition within the Crocus genus. Yet, the evolution of saffron biosynthesis remains unclear. We examined C. sativus, C. cartwrightianus (its closest progenitor), C. oreocreticus, and C. hardriaticus to trace saffron's evolution.
