Meadow and pasture inventory
The inventory of meadows and pastures began in 1987 and was made by county. The aim was to spread knowledge about the cultural and natural values of these lands and to create a basis for spatial planning. The objects were initially delimited by analogy on maps and only subsequently digitised by the counties. After careful studies of IR images, scale 1:60 000, interesting areas were plotted into topographic maps. After that, these areas of land were carefully inspected in the field. The area types identified by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency as decisive in the assessment are: well-maintained areas with long traditional continuity, good examples of the above mentioned, restored, endangered nature, vegetation types, biotopes, species, very rich flora and/or fauna, peculiar or strange areas. The base is partly table digitised on a scale of 1:10 000/20 000 with the economic map as a background and partly cut out of the economic map. The inventory methodology is described in 'Inventory of Meadows and Hawlands. Handbook' (Naturvårdsverket 1987). In 1999, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency initiated a project aimed at linking the information in the database to the GIS layers and obtaining a national comparable product.
