GLOWABO encompasses all lakes with an area greater than 0.002 km², and contains geographic and morphological data for approximately 117 million lakes. The total combined surface area of these lakes amounts to roughly 5 × 10⁶ km², accounting for 3.7% of Earth's non-glaciated terrestrial area. Large and medium-sized lakes make up the vast majority of the total lake surface area. Overall, the number of lakes is relatively small, but their total surface area exceeds previous statistically inferred estimates. GLOWABO enables assessments of fundamental lake-related questions at the global scale, providing a foundational framework to improve the quantification of wetland biogeochemical process contributions at large spatial scales.
