A “Train the Trainer” (TtT) model has been adopted in the North East and North Cumbria to maximise delivery of core “Making Every Contact Count” (MECC) training at scale across various sectors (Local Authority, NHS Trusts, Primary Care, Voluntary and Community Organisations, Criminal Justice, Emergency Services, Natural England). This aim of this model is that recipient of TtT training become trainers, cascading MECC training to frontline staff. The purpose of the project was to explore how the TtT programme can be optimised to ensure delivery of MECC training to frontline staff.
This data collection consists of semi-structured qualitative interviews conducted with individuals who were eligible for but had not attended MECC TtT training (n = 6), those who had attended (n = 13), and those who delivered MECC TtT training (n = 2)- know as 'principal trainers'. There were two separate topic guides depending on if the participant had attended MECC TtT training or not.
The topic guides explored participants' experience of accessing and attending the MECC TtT programme, and cascading MECC training.
Implementation of Making Every Contact Count (MECC), an opportunistic and person-centered approach to the promotion of health and wellbeing, often adopts a Train the Trainer (TtT) model whereby individuals are trained to cascade core MECC training to frontline staff. The TtT model may possess distinct benefits including delivering MECC at scale and utilising local knowledge and relationships. The current study aimed to explore the barriers and facilitators to cascading MECC training through the TtT model across the North East and North Cumbria. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals (n = 21) who were eligible for the MECC TtT programme but had not attended (n = 6), those who had attended (n = 13), and those who delivered the MECC TtT model (n = 2). The topic guides explored participants' experience of accessing and attending the MECC TtT programme, and cascading MECC training.
