GLOBal river SALiniTy and associated ions (GlobSalt)

To assess how pervasive this issue is globally and identify salinization hotspots, we compiled global data on river salinity and associated ions. We retrieved information from 62 different datasets (including WQP, Waterbase), harmonized it and merged it with watersheds from HydroATLAS to summarize information at the sub-catchment scale. Our global data set (GlobSalt database) features 13 parameters: electrical conductivity (EC), pH, major ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, SO42-, SiO32-), total organic carbon, nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate. GlobSalt contains approximately fifteen million records on a monthly scale for two hundred seventy thousand river stations from 1980 to 2023 from all continents except Antarctica.
