KOK1806 HOT-LAVA cruise, Seaglider 512, Mission 9

The HOT-LAVA mission was a rare opportunity to quickly survey and sample  the biogeochemical changes and ecological variability of the ocean off the south east coast of Hawaii when it was perturbed by lava pouring into the sea. Seaglider sg512  (mission 9), was deployed the first day to conduct transects to the south ahead of the R/V KOK and along the axis of the satellite imagery showing a chlorophyll bloom.   Its goal was to survey and provide reconnaissance for the ship's science personnel to ground truth the satellite's higher surface expression of chlorophyll and hopefully provide better station locations for sampling.   Subsequent to the cruise, it was to continue collecting data corresponding to the satellite imagery and monitor the longer regional changes due to the outflow of the lava into the ocean.   This
mission was prematurely  shortened due to a malfunctioning depth pressure sensor, necessitating an early recovery.

HOT-LAVA任务是一次难得的契机，得以在夏威夷东南近海因熔岩入海受到扰动之际，快速对该海域的生物地球化学变化与生态变异性开展调查与采样工作。水下滑翔机（Seaglider）sg512（任务9）于任务首日部署，在R/V KOK科考船前方向南布设调查断面，并沿显示出叶绿素水华的卫星影像轴线开展作业。其任务目标为开展调查并为船上科研人员提供侦察支援，以实地验证卫星观测到的表层高叶绿素浓度分布，并为后续采样作业优化站位布局。在本次科考航次的后续阶段，该水下滑翔机将持续采集与卫星影像匹配的数据，并监测熔岩入海所引发的长期区域环境变化。本次任务因深度压力传感器故障而过早终止，需提前回收。
