Site 42Ws4832, located in Washington County, southwest Utah, contains thermal
features, a surface rock cairn, rock scatters, lithic flakes, and ceramic sherds. Samples from
the fill of four slab-lined thermal features were examined for pollen, macrofloral remains, and/or
for organic residues using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Charcoal
fragments from three of the features also were AMS radiocarbon dated. Pollen and macrofloral
analyses will be used to provide subsistence information concerning plant resources utilized by
the site occupants, specifically if cactus was processed at the site. FTIR analysis will be used
to address use of both plants and animals. AMS radiocarbon dates will provide temporal
information about site occupation.
