The European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) for Soil Moisture (soil_moisture_cci) project generated an experimental break-adjusted soil moisture product for the first time via its v06.1 data release. This product aims to reduce discontinuities in the final CCI product by matching the statistical characteristics of datasets across merge periods. For v06.1, the break-adjustment process (explained in Preimesberger et al. 2020) was only applied to the combined product, using ERA5 soil moisture as the reference.
The soil moisture CCI combined dataset is one of three datasets created by the ESA Climate Change Initiative for Soil Moisture Essential Climate Variable (ECV). This product is developed by directly merging Level-2 scatterometer and radiometer soil moisture products from satellite instruments including AMI-WS, ASCAT, SMMR, SSM/I, TMI, AMSR-E, WindSat, AMSR2, SMOS, SMAP, FY-3B, and GPM. Passive and active products were also created.
The v06.1 combined break-adjusted product is provided as global daily imagery in NetCDF-4 Classic file format, with a spatial resolution of 0.25° and global coverage of surface soil moisture. It is provided in volumetric units [m³ m⁻³] and covers the period from 1978-11-01 to 2020-12-31 (yyyy-mm-dd).
