Jaley, winner of the Prix de Rome in 1827, sculpted this delicate young female nude as a mandatory assignment in his fourth and fifth years. He returns to the ancient theme of Venus in her bath, and handles the drapery, which hides as much as it reveals the female form, with great refinement.
