Gut microbiota acts as an important complementary role in human health and is shaped by diverse factors including ethnicity, dietary pattern, and surrounding environmental factors. However, the effect of high-altitude environments on the human gut microbiota is rarely investigated. Herein, we characterized the gut microbiota of 30 and 18 healthy individuals living in sea level and high-altitude areas, respectively, using deep whole-metagenome shotgun sequencing of their fecal samples. The results in this pilot study provided pieces for understanding the underlying mechanisms of high-altitude geographic adaptation of the human gut microbiome.
