Habitat is a simulation platform for embodied artificial intelligence (Embodied AI) research. Our goal is to advance the scientific and engineering development of embodied AI. Consider a scenario where you approach a home robot and ask: "Hey robot, could you check if my laptop is on my desk? If so, please bring it to me." Alternatively, you may query an egocentric AI assistant mounted on your smart glasses: "Hey, where did I last see my keys?" The Habitat platform enables training these embodied AI agents—virtual robots and egocentric assistants—in highly realistic and efficient 3D simulated environments, before transferring the learned skills to the real world. This shifts the research paradigm from static dataset-based "internet AI" (e.g., ImageNet, COCO, VQA) to embodied AI, where agents act within realistic environments, emphasizing active perception, long-term planning, learning from interaction, and environment-grounded dialogue.
