The vaginal microbiota plays an important role in the health of the female reproductive tract and is closely associated with a variety of pregnancy outcomes and sexually transmitted diseases. A variety of internal and external factors (such as geography, ethnicity, and diet) have a strong influence on the changes in a woman's vaginal microbiome. The effect of a high-altitude living environment on female vaginal microbiota has not been described. In this study, we characterized the vaginal bacteriome and virome of 13 and 34 healthy women living in high-altitude and sea-level areas, respectively, using whole-metagenome shotgun sequencing of their vaginal mucus samples.
