The intermetallic type-I clathrate CeBa7Au6Si40 exhibits unusual properties, in particular a strongly enhanced thermopower compared to its Ce-free counterpart. This has been attributed to the compound’s Kondo temperature being boosted by the thermal population of “rattling” phonon modes. Here we intend to scrutinize this picture using temperature dependent RIXS at the Ce M5 edge
