Extensive Urban Survey - Surrey

Extensive Urban Surveys have been undertaken or are presently being undertaken in a number of English counties as part of a wide ranging English Heritage initiative. Surrey, in common with many other counties, had a survey of its historic towns carried out almost thirty years ago, as a result of an initiative by the Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments (then part of the Department of the Environment). This survey has formed a basis and background for archaeological work in towns throughout the ensuing period, but is now in urgent need of replacement to reflect current knowledge and planning concerns.

The project was carried out on behalf of Surrey County Council.
