This study aimed to investigate, via 16s rRNA amplicon sequencing, the effect of three natural water additive treatments; an organic acid (OA) blend, a medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) treatment, and an essential oil (EO) blend on the caecal microbiota of farm raised broilers. These three treatment groups were compared to both the general flock and a control group. It was found that all treatments had a considerable effect on the caecal microbiota, with the Firmicutes:Bacteroidetes ratio (F:B) and the other genera of interest varying between treatment groups. This study highlights the dybiosis that can occur with natural water additive treatment and further highlights the need for further research on the effect of broiler additives on the caecal microbiota.
