This is the metadata for a study examining the perspectives and experiences of young people who had participated in a nature-based intervention in Ireland.
This study is one of fifteen PhD research projects in the ASTRA Project: Applying Sustainability Transition Research in Social Work tackling Major Societal Challenge of Social Inclusion, aiming to tackle the major societal challenges faced in the practice of social work.
This research project consists of two case studies to explore two types of nature-based interventions more deeply and to apply both the capability approach and the ecosocial approach in social work to the study. Four organisations providing nature-based interventions were separated by the type of services they provide into two cases.
Case one contains data collected from three outdoor-based personal development programmes across Ireland, including seven interviews and nine hours of participant observations.
Case two contains data collected from one organisation providing equine-assisted services, including one interview and thirty-five hours of participant observations. In total, the data set contains 8 semi-structured interviews and participant observations of approximately 30 people observed over 41 hours. The interviews took place in 2022 and 2023 and the observations took place over a 3-week period in May 2023.
The data was collected from young people in Ireland aged 15-29 who self-reported as experiencing a precarious situation and who were currently or previously engaged in a nature-based intervention in Ireland.
Due to the sensitive nature of the data and the inability to fully anonymise the data, only the metadata will be published from this project. This is explained further in the attached document.
This study is relevant for research in social work, and could also benefit other disciplines such as environmental psychology, youth work, outdoor education and human development.
