This research project builds on strong preliminary data that suggest environmental arsenic exposure induces degradation of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR), the chloride channel that is absent or defective in the genetic disease cystic fibrosis. Data from this epidemiological study investigates associations between environmental arsenic exposure, lung function, glucose tolerance, sweat chloride, and CFTR concentrations in peripheral mononuclear blood cells. These studies take place in Bangladesh, a country experiencing an unprecedented epidemic of arsenic poisoning through contaminated drinking water.
