The marine Haplosclerida are an enigmatic group of marine sponges from the Demospongiae. Having a long evolutionary history they have developed a range of chemical compounds for defence, health and offence, some of which may be of medical importance in the form of new drugs and new research compounds. This project focused on utilising an OMICS approach to discover biosynthetic gene clusters, particularly those responsible for the production of 3-alkylpyridine alkaloids which appear to have anti-cancer activity.

海生单软海绵目（Haplosclerida）是隶属于寻常海绵纲（Demospongiae）的一类神秘海洋海绵类群。该类群拥有漫长的演化历史，演化出一系列用于防御、生理维持与攻击的化学物质，其中部分可开发为新药及新型研究用化合物，具备重要医学应用价值。本研究采用组学（OMICS）策略，旨在挖掘生物合成基因簇（biosynthetic gene clusters），尤其是负责合成3-烷基吡啶生物碱（3-alkylpyridine alkaloids）的基因簇，这类生物碱已被证实具有抗癌活性。
