The primary goal of this study is to investigate the mechanisms of arsenate (As(V)) reduction in sediment environments, specifically focusing on the role of non-phototrophic microorganisms in photoelectron-assisted processes. The study finds significant enrichment of As(V)-reducing bacteria in microcosms exposed to sunlight and DOM, suggesting that non-phototrophic microorganisms play a crucial role in As(V) reduction by utilizing photoelectrons, which has important implications for understanding microbial photoelectrophy and its potential applications in bioremediation strategies for arsenic-contaminated environments.
