The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, has completed a cultural resource survey in association with the proposed construction of a second fire house at Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The proposed undertaking will include remodeling Building TT0205 with the construction of a new, attached, metal building, as well as an expanded driveway and associated improvements and utilities. The new structure will accommodate a second Fire Company and include dormitory space for personnel and storage for vehicles and equipment, with a total area of approximately 3,000 square feet. The cultural resource survey included archaeological and architectural survey investigations. The Project Area for the archaeological survey includes the proposed footprint of new construction and measures approximately 0.12 hectares (0.3 acres). The Area of Potential Effect for architectural resources includes those areas that could be exposed to direct visual impacts from the undertaking.
The objective of the archaeological survey was to identify any historic properties that may be located within the Project Area and evaluate the potential eligibility of any such resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The archaeological survey included pedestrian surface survey and the excavation of shovel tests. No archaeological sites, artifacts, cultural features, or cultural deposits were encountered during the archaeological survey.
The objective of the architectural survey was to identify any historic properties that may be adversely affected by direct visual impacts as a result of the proposed undertaking. As a result of previous architectural surveys, Building TT0205 has been recorded with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources as an individual architectural resource (VDHR No. 016-0349-0011) within the Mica Headquarters Historic District (VDHR No. 016-5031). The VDHR previously determined that the Mica Headquarters Historic District is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register as the buildings have been altered and no longer represent the rural village of Mica. No previously unrecorded architectural resources were identified within the APE during the current architectural survey.
