Microbial Dark Matter project: Applying single-cell genomics, we targeted and sequenced uncultivated archaeal and bacterial cells from nine diverse habitats belonging to 28 major uncharted branches of the tree of life. With this genomic information, we could resolve numerous intra- and inter-phylum level relationships and discovered unexpected metabolic features that extend our understanding of biology and challenge established boundaries between the three domains of life.
微生物暗物质(Microbial Dark Matter)研究项目:本项目依托单细胞基因组学(single-cell genomics)技术,对来自9种不同生境的未培养古菌(archaeal)与细菌(bacterial)细胞开展靶向分选并完成测序,这些细胞分属生命演化树(tree of life)的28个全新未探明的主要分支。依托上述基因组数据,我们得以解析大量门类内及跨门类的演化关系,并发现了诸多意料之外的代谢特征——这些特征不仅拓展了我们对生物学的认知边界,同时也对生命三大域(three domains of life)之间已确立的固有分界提出了挑战。
