Excavations at South Gate, Exeter 1988 (Exeter archive site 96)

Excavations concluded early in 1989 in advance of road improvements around the Acorn Roundabout. Part of the stone Roman South Gate was uncovered and an earlier timber gate, associated with an earthen rampart. Earliest feature mid 1st-century legionary fortress Roman road and late 2nd century defensive earth bank on the line of the later Roman City Wall.

1989年初，为配合橡子环岛（Acorn Roundabout）周边道路升级工程开展的考古发掘工作顺利完成。本次发掘揭露了罗马南城门（Roman South Gate）的部分石质遗存，同时还发现了一座更早的木质城门（timber gate），该城门与一处土筑壁垒（earthen rampart）相关联。此次发掘所揭示的最早考古遗存，涵盖公元1世纪中叶的军团要塞（legionary fortress）配套罗马古道，以及位于后续罗马城市城墙原址沿线的公元2世纪末防御土堤（defensive earth bank）。
