This cluster of walls, floors and debris linked to the bedrock are what remain of three houses built up by the relatives of the prisoners who worked in the construction of el Valle de los Caídos. They are located close to the monument entrance in what was known as the San Román camp. It was the biggest of the three in the valley. In it free-workers and prisoners, stationed in the barracks, lived with their families. The majority of the barracks, stores and, even, the football camp were destroyed as soon as the construction of the monument finished. The regime's aim was to create an artificial landscape were the cross on the top bright over a wild forest of pinetrees, that were planted. But some remain, some of the family houses were repeatedly used by the employees who worked in the monument, they played and kept their animals in the same places were a spouse and her child wait the arrival of a tyred husband that has been cutting and smashing rocks to gain their freedom. Arcaheology is nothing but memory.
