As of June 23, 2020, around 55 percent of public schools for special needs education had to close temporarily for 31 to 40 days due to the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Japan. Close to 100 percent of the surveyed public schools in the country experienced a temporary closure after April 1. Following the rapid growth of the number of COVID-19 cases, the government declared a countrywide state of emergency on April 16 and requested businesses, schools, and others to shut down. The state was lifted completely on May 25.
