In a meta-analysis, we investigated the impact of two invasive species, Spartina alterniflora and Phragmites australis, on coastal wetlands and found an increase in methane emissions, with Phragmites having a lesser effect. We show that the drivers of these increased emissions may be related to individual plant traits rather than sources of organic matter.
