North Coast and Cascades Inventory and Monitoring Network (NCCN) has developed a baren land and water mask for Mount Rainier, Olympic, and North Cascades National Parks and surrounding areas as part of the NCCN Landscape Change Monitoring Protocol (https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2097545). This protocol uses satellite imagery, LandTrendr algorithms, and machine learning to detect, map, and label annual landscape disturbances—such as avalanches, landslides, riparian changes, fires, and insect and disease outbreaks—across Pacific Northwest national parks and adjacent lands. The mask identifies areas with minimal or no vegetation cover, where spectral changes detected by LandTrendr are typically driven by annual differences in snow or cloud cover, water-surface reflectance, shading, or seasonal variations in herbaceous or shrub phenology.
