Phylogenomics of Leptospira santarosai, a prevalent pathogenic species in the Americas

Here we sequenced 10 genomes from Leptospira santarosai recovered from patients between 2020 and 2021 in Costa Rica, Central America, as well as 8 additional L. santarosai genomes from our collection. These genomes were compared to published L. santarosai genomes to provide an overview of the genomic features of this important pathogen. Our study sheds new light onto the genomic diversity, evolutionary history and epidemiology of leptospirosis in America and globally. In addition, our work provides a framework for understanding the virulence and spread of this pathogen and for improving its surveillance in both humans and animals.

本研究完成了中美洲哥斯达黎加2020至2021年间分离自患者体内的10株圣塔罗萨钩端螺旋体(Leptospira santarosai)的基因组测序,并纳入了本课题组保藏的另外8株圣塔罗萨钩端螺旋体基因组。将上述基因组与已发表的圣塔罗萨钩端螺旋体基因组进行比对分析,以全面概述这一重要致病菌的基因组特征。本研究为美洲乃至全球范围内钩端螺旋体病(leptospirosis)的基因组多样性、演化历史及流行病学特征提供了全新认知。此外,本研究为解析该致病菌的致病力与传播特性、优化人类与动物的钩端螺旋体病监测体系提供了理论框架。
