NOTE: Modelled distribution for all fish species have been amalgamated into one dataset. Please use the Common Name field (or the Species field) field to split them out. As a consequence of this amalgamation each river/stream reach in the dataset may be represented multiple times - one for each species it relates to. The information below relates to all four indigenous fish datasets: Indigenous Fish - Known Historic Locations Indigenous Fish - Known Migratory Pathways Indigenous Fish - Modelled Distribution Indigenous Fish - Modelled Migratory Pathways. These datasets combine information from several data sources to identify potential distributions of native freshwater fish and their migratory pathways in the Bay of Plenty Region. Please note that fish distributions are subject to change as our knowledge of species distributions grows over time. Known historic and known migratory locations are based on the combination of recorded observations from the New Zealand Freshwater Fish Database and an internal BOPRC fish dataset compiled in September 2021. ‘Modelled distributions’ for each species are based on the predicted distributions using the following model: Crow, S.K., Booker D., Sykes J., Unwin M., Shankar U. 2014. Predicting distributions of New Zealand freshwater fishes. NIWA Client Report CHC2014-145 The probability threshold applied for each species in the model is listed as follows: Common name Ecological database abbreviation Modelling probability threshold Banded kōkopu Galfas ≥0.42 Bluebill bully Gobhub ≥0.20 Common bully Gobcot ≥0.41 Common smelt Retret ≥0.37 Cran’s bully Gobbas ≥0.24 Dwarf galaxias Galdiv ≥0.315 Giant bully Gobgob ≥0.28 Giant kōkopu Galarg ≥0.74 Īnanga Galmac ≥0.26 Koaro Galbre ≥0.535 Lamprey Geoaus ≥0.51 Longfin eel Angdie ≥0.65 Redfin bully Gobhut ≥0.25 Shortfin eel Angaus ≥0.46 Shortjaw kōkopu Galpos ≥0.335 Torrentfish Chefos ≥0.6 The ‘known migratory pathway’ and ‘modelled migratory pathway’ link the known and modelled species locations to the coastal environment. This reflects the connectivity required for species to compete their lifecycles. For information on the specific habitat requirements and lifecycles of freshwater fish, please see Habitat requirements of native freshwater fish in Aotearoa New Zealand (https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/freshwater-fish) There are also other freshwater mahinga kai species where only a few sites are listed in the New Zealand Freshwater Fish Database, and no model for their distribution is available. NZFFD_Kakahi_ echmen – no model NZFFD_Koura_parpla- no model.
