Unlocking the Mysteries of Hot Gaseous Coronae: A Legacy Study of NGC 6753

Hot gaseous coronae in the dark matter halos of present day massive galaxies arethe fundamental prediction of galaxy formation models. Although the firstcoronae around massive spirals have recently been detected, these data onlyallow us to measure their basic properties and carry notable systematicuncertainties. We propose a deep XMMNewton observation of NGC6753. We will (1)establish the temperature and metallicity structure of the gas, (2) utilizecomplex spectral models, thereby removing the systematic uncertainties, and (3)constrain the baryon mass fraction.
