NODC-PT

The Portuguese National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC-PT) is a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) dedicated to the management and dissemination of marine geospatial data. It is part of a global network of national oceanographic data centres coordinated by the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) programme of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The main objective of this infrastructure is to improve access to Portuguese marine data by promoting interoperable access to datasets that support scientific research and technical applications across several thematic domains, including atmospheric sciences, biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, marine geology, bathymetry, physical oceanography, environmental sciences, and administrative and reference data. NODC-PT is jointly managed by the Hydrographic Institute (IH) and the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA), in coordination with the Portuguese Committee for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (CP-COI). NODC-PT has been recognised as an endorsed action of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade), under Challenge 8: Create a Digital Representation of the Ocean. Through this collaborative framework, NODC-PT facilitates the discovery, access, integration, and reuse of marine data, ensuring transparency and interoperability through the adoption of standardised metadata and international best practices.
