Traffic censuses are carried out at regular intervals in the Hamburg area. The results from these censuses are primarily used for traffic planning and to determine the traffic development in Hamburg.
For each year, the average daily traffic volumes are determined as a characteristic of the average traffic load of a road cross-section and displayed on a map. Using mathematical-statistical methods, a distinction is made according to average values of all days (DTV, Monday to Sunday) and all working days (DTVw, Monday to Friday).
The average values of vehicle traffic strengths are based on more than 300 levels (cross-sectional censuses) at which flowing vehicle traffic is recorded by means of continuous counting points (induction loops), infrared sensors (thermal imaging cameras) or manual traffic censuses (sampled on representative days, at least once a year). The heavy goods traffic share refers to all vehicles > 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. If a metering point is directly or indirectly influenced by a construction site for the majority of the year (e.g. by diversion traffic), the traffic volume is marked accordingly.
The basis for the average values of the wheel traffic strengths is currently more than 50 locations where cycling traffic is recorded by means of infrared sensors (thermal imaging cameras) and a continuous counting point (induction loop). For the years 1984 to 2021, historical data are also included at 38 levels at which cycle traffic was collected by means of manual traffic censuses (sampled on representative days, at least once a year). The historical data are explicitly not a DTV(w), but the non-extrapolated count values determined over several hours on a day of the year.
In this service, the average daily traffic volumes since 2004 (car traffic) and 2015 (cycling traffic) are published (as an Excel table for download), visualized as a table and diagram are each the last 10 years.
