Natura 2000 — Special Conservation Areas (SAC) — Habitats Directive in Burgundy-Franche-Comté

The European Flora Habitats Directive establishes a framework for Community actions for the conservation of species of wild fauna and flora and their habitats. The Directive lists more than 200 natural habitat types, 200 animal species and 500 plant species of Community interest and requiring protection. The Special Areas of Conservation (SAC), currently more than 20,000 for around 12 % of Europe’s territory, allow protection of these endangered habitats and species.
