Monitoring floods in the Sahel and Central Africa, 2024

Photo credits: © FAO Nigeria The Data in Emergencies (DIEM) team at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) regularly examines satellite images to monitor the flood extent resulting from the various rain seasons around the world. This StoryMap provides an update on the August–October 2024 fortnightly assessments in the Sahel and Central Africa and provides comparisons to the 2023 assessments. After the success of the monitoring efforts in 2023, DIEM is conducting flood monitoring in the Sahel and Central Africa for a second year. In 2024, Burkina Faso has been added to the list of regularly assessed countries. There are now seven countries being monitored as shown in the map to the right.
