Stolpersteine plates installed in the city Madrid
The stolpersteine (stones of stumbling, in their literal translation) or “tras(pie)dras” (as they are called in Spanish) are blocks of cement of 10x10x10 centimeters inserted in the ground and that, in the upper part, have embedded a plate of brass of 10x10 centimeters with the name and the key dates in the life of a series of the Madrid victims deported to the Nazi concentration camps. Each stolperstein is placed on the sidewalks, forming part of them, with the upper surface almost flush with the ground. Its design is based on the idea that, when perceiving the highlight on the road, people stop and lean over to read what is engraved on the plate. This gesture of respect honors the memory of those who were victims of Nazi ideology. The stolpersteine project, created by German artist Gunter Demnig, has expanded to more than 75,000 memory stones in 20 countries. Each of these stones represents a person with a name, date of birth, details of deportation, and date of death or release. It is a moving reminder of history and a way to keep alive the memory of those who suffered during those dark times.Responsible Unity: Directorate-General for Territorial Coordination and Deconcentration
