It is based on Natural Earths 10m resolution rivers and lake centerlines shapefile, used to compute the distance from each US bridge to the nearest major river or stream. This distance serves as a proxy for flood exposure and scour risk—bridges near major waterways experience more frequent flooding, higher scour forces, and greater moisture exposure. The dataset is primarily a reference file used in the ETL pipeline to compute stream distance features for bridges and is not a primary research dataset.
