Sodium reduction of (t-BuC5H4)2ZrCl2 in diethyl ether gives [{(t-BuC5H4)(t-BuC5H3)Zr(μ-H)Na}2·OEt2]2, 1; toluene extraction of 1 produces the self-assembled tetramer [{(t-BuC5H4)(t-BuC5H3)Zr(μ-H)Na}2]4, 2 (the Na8Zr8 linkage of 2 resembles the seams of a “tennis ball”). Both 1 and 2 are diamagnetic, which may be attributed to the presence of direct Zr−Zr bonds (Zr−Zr: 3.2930(16) Å (1), 3.3076(7) Å (2)).
