XMM-Newton survey of luminous Herbig AeBe stars

The reason why the Herbig Ae/Be stars emit Xrays is not understood. A popularscenario is that the Herbig Ae/Be stars are not the sources of this emission,but rather the Xrays come from unresolved lowmass companion stars (TTauristars). However, our archival study shows that the most luminous Herbig Ae/Bestars can emit Xrays much above what is seen from TTauri stars, suggestingthat at least for the most luminous L>10^3\\,L_{\\odot} Herbig Ae/Be stars some other mechanism must be responsible for the Xray emission. Only 8 HerbigAe/Be stars in this key luminosity range have been observed in Xrays, and thuswe propose a survey for XMMNewton to measure the Xray luminosities of a sampleof 24 additional luminous Herbig Ae/Be stars. truncated!, Please see actual data for full text [truncated!, Please see actual data for full text]
