KYTC - Extended Weight Coal Haul System

This feature layer represents Kentucky's Extended Weight Coal or Coal By-Products Haul Road System. These road sections had at least 50,000 tons of coal or coal by-products reported as being transported over them during the previous calendar year, as outlined in KRS 177.9771 and KRS 177.979. Public highways that meet specific criteria are designated as part of this system, including state-maintained toll roads, which are always included per KRS 177.9771(1). The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), under KRS 189.230(2), has the authority to set lower gross vehicle weight limits for bridges at risk of catastrophic failure due to excessive loads. Additionally, KRS 177.9771(9) requires the KYTC Secretary to consult with local governing bodies before changing the extended weight haul system. This administrative regulation establishes the road network and related bridge weight limits to ensure safety and infrastructure integrity for heavy coal transportation.
