Assessing biosignature potential of filamentous sulfur mats

Limited knowledge of fossilization processes provides uncertainties to morphological biosignatures. We therefore assessed the preservation of microbial mats rich with filamentous sulfur oxidizing bacteria after exposure to iron-sulfur-rich conditions and high temperatures, mimicking settings during burial and/or hydrothermal alteration.
