Metal Abundances and Binding Mass in X-ray Faint Elliptical Galaxies

We propose a deep XMMNewton observation (100 ks) of an Xray faint ellipticalgalaxy, NGC 1316, to unambiguously determine Fe and alphaelement abundances. Our data (in conjunction with the existing Chandra data) will allow us to bestmap the diffuse gas at large radii and to accurately measure the gravitationalbinding mass. We will then address the origin of the large L_X/L_B scatter ofearly type galaxies in terms of ISM removal mechanisms and the amount of darkmatter.
