Unitization Drilling Units

Unitizations – Boundaries of the oil and gas Marcellus and Utica/Point Pleasant formation, Unitizations are Ordered by the Chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management. A unitization is ordered if an applicant has acquired >65% of the mineral rights in a unit (proposed area), production of the unit is reasonably necessary to increase substantially the recovery of oil and gas, and the value of the estimated additional recovery of oil or gas exceeds the estimated additional cost incident to conducting the operation of a proposed area. Horizontal Drilling Units – The boundaries of the area a horizontal well or group of Horizontal wells are producing from. This dataset is updated as new final plat maps are received by DOGRM or when a well has been reported by the owner to be in production and a final plat of the production area has been submitted. The horizontal drilling unit boundaries are created from the paper final survey maps or unitization boundaries. The boundaries are only approximate and should not be assumed to be the exact boundary of a horizontal drilling unit. The paper or pdf final (submitted after well bores are perforated) survey maps are a more accurate representation of a drilling unit boundary. In Ohio a horizontal drilling unit is a group of parcels or parts of parcels where the owners have sold their mineral rights to a company for the purpose of oil and Gas extraction using the Hydraulic Fracturing process. Each producing horizontal well has a drilling unit. Most Horizontal wells reside on pads and each pad can have multiple producing wells. The Horizontal units associated too wells on the same pad are merged by either the company submitting the unit boundaries or by DOGRM. The drilling units of wells that do not reside on pads are identified by their permit numbers. In some cases, boundaries shown on a final plat include areas that are not being produced because the area was included in the final as drilled plat, which results in some Horizontal Drilling Units that include areas that have not been produced.
