Dynamic Rock-Slope Stability during Sliding Failure

Two complimentary slopes were placed onto a fixed ramp inside of a rigid container. Each slope presented a distinct pattern of discontinuity formations. Slope 1 represented a blocky composition with two discontinuity sets (one at 20 deg. and one at 110 deg. from horizontal). Slope 2 represented a sheet-like structure with a single discontinuity set (20 degrees from horizontal). The slopes were instrumented and subjected to a series of various dynamic input signals with the basic waveforms consisting of: monochromatic sine waves, frequency sweeping sine waves, and transient input motions.
